RIP MF DOOM

Let’s just get this out the way, 2020 was a shit year. But, one discovery, I found that I actually like it best when our favorite artists are locked up with no tour dates or other social obligations. It just makes for banging inspiration!

We have also lost some greats in music this year. The beginning of 2021, we found out that long time London born, NY native rapper, MF Doom, was announced dead January 1,2021 (in the media), but had passed on Halloween 2020.

MF Doom is an artist that staples the time of the end of my teen-hood. Over the years I tend to visit his albums (MM…FOOD, is amongst my favorite album, along with Madvillainy).

I was intrigued by his lyricism, the way he bends and binds the words to masterful production tracks. Never get tired of hearing the massive vocabularies that these rappers hoard and unleash into their tracks. The vault of words with a mixture of wit and humor are what stood out the most in Doom’s music. His sound is reminiscent of 80s and 90s hip hop, which make sense with his discography over the years.

Daniel Dumile, stage name MF Doom, adapted the name from Marvel super villain Doctor Doom in the late 90s and had been an active artist prior and ongoing. The masked rapper began his career in 1988 with the hip hop trio KMD, Kausing Much Damage, members included: Zev Love X (MF Doom), DJ Subroc (Doom’s brother), and Onyx the Birthstone Kid Rodan (a mutual friend of the two). After the death of DJ Subroc in 1993, the group split. MF Doom came back as a solo artist in the late 1990s with his debut album, Operation: Doomsday. He was also in another music group, that went by the name of Monsta Island Czars, Daniel took on the alas King Geedorah.

After asking some friends, I’ve complied an Ode to Doom playlist for you. If you’ve been a long time fan or have just now become inspired due to his death, take a wonder over here: DEATH to Doom, but never forgotten, right?

He told his stories, but he also gave listeners an ear full of rap with genuine disks and mindful skits. Here’s to one of the greats!

Happy 2021~New year, new music!
